Files To Other Devices

Practical guides for using Files To Other Devices. Start with the network and installation requirements, then choose a guide for your situation.

Transfer files between Android devices over Wi-Fi

This walkthrough covers Files To Other Devices. It is not a general guide to every Wi-Fi Direct app: this app requires the same Wi-Fi network on both Android devices before file transfer can begin.

Prepare the connection

  1. Install Files To Other Devices on both Android phones or tablets.
  2. Connect both to the same local Wi-Fi network. Do not use separate guest and private networks.
  3. Check that the router or access point does not isolate clients or block communication between connected devices.
  4. Open the app on both devices and follow any on-screen permission requests.

Send and check a small file first

  1. On the sending device, look for the receiving device and select it.
  2. Follow the connection prompts. After the devices connect, the app uses Wi-Fi P2P for the transfer.
  3. Select one photo or document and start copying it.
  4. On the receiving device, check the Download folder or the destination folder configured in the app and open the copied file.

Once a small transfer works, select the larger set of files you want to copy. Check free space on the destination device, keep both phones nearby and wait for completion. Do not delete the source files until you have checked the copies.

If the phones do not connect

Wi-Fi being switched on is not enough: both devices must be on the same network, and that network must permit device-to-device communication. See the troubleshooting checklist. A phone-created hotspot has not been verified for this app.
