Practical guides for using Files To Other Devices. Start with the network and installation requirements, then choose a guide for your situation.

Copy selected files from an old Android phone to a new one

Files To Other Devices can help you copy personal files from one Android device to another. This is a file-copying workflow, not a complete Android migration: app accounts, app data, messages and system settings may need their own transfer methods.

Prepare both devices

  1. Install Files To Other Devices on both phones.
  2. Connect both to the same Wi-Fi network; the network must permit phone-to-phone communication.
  3. Charge both devices and check available storage on the new phone.
  4. On the old phone, decide which photos, videos and documents to copy first.

Make a test copy

Open the app on both devices, connect the old phone to the new phone in the app and follow any on-screen prompts. Start by copying one small file. Find it in the new phone's Download folder or configured destination folder and open it to confirm that the transfer worked.

Move the remaining files in groups

Copy photos, documents and videos in manageable groups. After each group, check that the files have arrived. Do not erase or reset the old phone until you have verified everything you intended to keep and separately moved any app-specific data you need.

If the new phone is not found

Make sure the app is installed and running on both devices, both use the same Wi-Fi network and that network does not isolate connected clients. See connection troubleshooting for more checks.
